Welcome To Jodhpur

Ah, Jodhpur! Leaving the golden hues of Jaisalmer for the “Blue City” is a delightful transition. Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan, offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and vibrant city life, all painted in a distinctive shade of blue.

Blue City Of Rajasthan

Iconic Landmarks:

  • Mehrangarh Fort: Towering majestically over the city on a rocky hill, Mehrangarh Fort is an imposing and magnificent structure. Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, it’s one of the largest and best-preserved forts in India. Its massive walls enclose stunning palaces (like Sheesh Mahal and Phool Mahal), intricate courtyards, and a fascinating museum housing royal artifacts, weaponry, and art. The view of the “Blue City” from the fort ramparts is simply breathtaking.
  • Jaswant Thada: This serene and beautiful white marble cenotaph was built in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Often referred to as the “Taj Mahal of Marwar,” its intricate carvings, peaceful gardens, and the nearby lake create a tranquil atmosphere. Inside, you can find portraits of Jodhpur’s rulers.
  • Umaid Bhawan Palace: A grand and opulent palace, Umaid Bhawan is one of the world’s largest private residences. A part of it is still home to the Jodhpur royal family, while another section has been converted into a luxurious Taj Palace Hotel and a museum. The museum offers a glimpse into the royal lifestyle, showcasing artifacts, vintage cars, and the palace’s fascinating history, including its construction during a famine to provide employment.

Things to Do:

  • Explore the Blue City: Wander through the narrow, winding lanes of the old city, where many houses are painted in a striking shade of blue. This tradition is believed to have originated with Brahmins, but its cooling properties and aesthetic appeal led to its wider adoption. A walking tour is a fantastic way to soak in the atmosphere and discover hidden gems.
  • Visit Toorji Ka Jhalra (Toorji’s Step Well): This intricately designed stepwell, dating back to the 18th century, is a stunning example of traditional water management systems and architecture. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
  • Shop at Sardar Market and Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar): Located in the heart of the old city, Sardar Market is a bustling hub of activity. You can find everything from textiles and handicrafts to spices and local delicacies. The towering Clock Tower stands as a prominent landmark.
  • Experience a Bishnoi Village Safari: Take a day trip to the nearby Bishnoi villages to witness the unique culture and traditions of the Bishnoi community, known for their deep respect for nature and wildlife.
  • Explore Mandore Garden: Located a short drive from Jodhpur, Mandore was the former capital of the Marwar rulers. The gardens feature impressive royal cenotaphs with distinct architectural styles and the Hall of Heroes.
  • Enjoy a Desert Safari: While Jaisalmer is more famous for its desert excursions, you can still experience camel or jeep safaris in the outskirts of Jodhpur, particularly towards Osian.
  • Visit Kaylana Lake: This artificial lake offers a peaceful retreat and opportunities for boating and enjoying the surrounding landscape.
  • Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park: Situated near Mehrangarh Fort, this unique park was created to restore the natural ecology of a rocky wasteland, showcasing the native flora of the Thar Desert.

Best Time to Visit:

Similar to Jaisalmer, the best time to visit Jodhpur is during the winter months, from October to March. The weather is pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Getting There:

Jodhpur has its own airport with domestic flight connections. It’s also well-connected by rail and road to major cities in Rajasthan and other parts of India. The journey from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur by road or train takes approximately 4-6 hours, making it a convenient addition to your Rajasthan itinerary.

Jodhpur offers a distinct charm with its blue cityscape, formidable fort, and rich cultural heritage, providing a different yet equally captivating experience compared to Jaisalmer. You’ll find a blend of historical grandeur and vibrant modern life in this fascinating city.
